Fades – The term “fade” originated in ethnic shops and has now become the popular term for an aggressively tight taper. Hair at the sides and back is cut as close as possible with clippers and “fades” or tapers up into almost any length on top. In some cases this haircut is also called a “military reg” as each branch of service has a different requirement. Hair on top can be styled neatly or given a messy texture with gel, paste, or pomade.
Buzz – A general term used to refer to haircuts that are done entirely with clippers. Technically speaking, there is no “official” style which can be called a buzzcut.
Razor – A razor cut is a haircut performed with a razor. This technique can produce a variety of effects, such as removing, eliminating frizz, or giving the haircut a separated, textured shaggy look.
Clipper Cut – The clipper haircut is similar to the buzzcut in that the hair is electric clipper cut all over the head, but the top is rounded rather than flat. This style of haircut is a good option for military, law enforcement, athletes, or anyone who desires a short, low-maintenance haircut (but one with a bit more character than a one-length all over buzzcut). Cutting a any kind of clipper cut takes a steady hand and a good eye which is in the hands of your professional stylist.
Scissor Cut – Scissors are used to create close-cut, defined shapes in long, short, cropped hair. The technique is generally used in men’s hairdressing to create a look that tapers in at the nape and side areas. Accurate use of the comb is important as it guides the scissors and helps to shape the cut. The scissors-over-comb action is very common and will help to create a gentle easy blended haircut.
